My Cornaccia cup, Italy 2022 – Mischa Jankowska

Mischa Jankowska (England Number 7)

This Easter, I was selected to play in the Cornaccia Cup tournament in Italy. For a lot of the juniors, like myself, this was our last year in the England talent programme and were delighted to get the opportunity to compete internationally.

On the 15th of April, a team of cadet girls, junior boys and junior girls all met at Stansted airport early in the morning. Our flight was just under two hours, during which time the boys played a game of musical chairs, we finally arrived in Pordenone. We were met with the warm Italian weather and an hour bus ride to our hotel. The place we ate dinner at was a communal place where all the teams ate together, in a school canteen-like style.

After eating, we hopped back on the bus to get to the hotel. By this time it was quite late and everyone was incredibly exhausted from all the travel. Once we had our team meeting, went straight to bed.

We played our first match on Saturday morning against an Italian team named Pallavolo Brugnera, being our first match, we had an incredible slow start to the game and were pretty much destroyed by them.

They won the first set 25 to 14, which was a bit of a shocker, and they also took the second set of us, 25 to 10. However, by the third set – thankfully – we put up an incredibly good fight – the final score being 25 to 23.

Now the team had had time to gel, we went into our second game much stronger. We played a team from Buddapest called MTK. The atmosphere on and off court was absolutely incredible, and everyone massively stepped up their game, diving for every ball, attacking every shot.

Although we lost all three sets, the score in all three was 25 to 22 – it was a little frustrating because we genuinely believed we could have taken at least one set if we had just been able to finish. However, our coaches were still impressed by how far we had come since the morning and knew we had two more games to play.

That evening, we were allowed to explore the local town and went to get some ice-cream.

We played our third match on Sunday morning against a team from Sweden named RIG, unfortunately we were just no match for them and lost all three sets to them.

We only scored 11 points in the first and last set and in the second, we reached 13. I think most of us were quite disappointed with our performance and were determined to improve for our final match.

After lunch, we went to play our final match against another Italian team named Domovip Porcia, and we really gave it our all. The game was incredibly close, and we actually managed to take a set of them. Although on another day we could have potentially beaten them, we were so proud of how well we played in this game and everyone felt as though we had won.

That evening we went to the town again and were joined by the boys who hired E-scooters and were whizzing through the streets, we even made our coaches have a go on them.

On our last day in Italy, both junior teams didn’t have any more matches, so we went to support the cadet girls play their final game and to see then win their first game! At least we were coming home with some success.

The weather was so nice, we went to town at lunch. After watching the women’s and the men’s finals, we attended the closing ceremony and received an award for participation. Although we didn’t fully understand what was going on as the ceremony was presented in Italian, so the girls next to us were translating it for us.

On Tuesday morning I had to wake up at 5am, that was rough. We ate our breakfast and headed off to the airport for our flight home. All the teams had bonded really nicely on the trip and although it had been a lot of fun, we were all very excited to sleep in our own beds again.

I want to thank our coaches Alex Smith and Cat Machado for taking us to Italy, they did an amazing job managing the team on and off court. I’m very grateful to have been able to play internationally alongside such amazing team of girls that got on as well as we did. It was an incredible experience.

Our Exeter Ladies Challenge Experience – Plymouth University Girls

Each year we ask a number of our younger players to report back on their experiences in the SW. This years will be the 25th anniversary of the ELC event so we ask the 2019 Plymouth University girls for their comments.

Player 1.

Being allowed to play in the Exeter Ladies Challenge, gave our team a chance to practice and play together at the end of the season. The other teams at the tournament made it fun and challenging to play against them. Due to the wide variety of teams, there was a fun atmosphere throughout the whole day with teams supporting each other whilst playing against each other competitively. It was nice to see players from all ages playing together and to see the young and upcoming volleyball players of the south west playing volleyball at such a level. Also a huge congratulations to the boys from south west who won the tournament. They were to play against.

Player 2.

This was my first time participating in a volleyball tournament, exhausting yet thrilling, I really enjoyed the day and would definitely participate again. Playing timed games against players of all ages and abilities, from those local to the area to as far as Bristol, meant every game was different. One of the teams we competed against in the early stages were the tournament winners, South West boys. The game was very competitive and the timed element meant every point counted and added that extra pressure. And when you’re not playing, your team becomes a refereeing team, so there is no chance of getting bored across the day.

Player 3.

Standard of Exeter tournament was really good, all teams had good performance. Our team started off really well but eventually lost to the south west boys team, which went onto win. The day went smooth and was really well organized , everyone seemed to have fun and our team genuinely enjoyed playing together again against good teams.

Player 4.

We played a respectively right amount games for a days tournament and considering a team dropped out it still didn’t effect the days organisation. Each of our games were so close and the deserved winners of the day were South West boys which we had a very close game with. Furthermore, showing the high level of play by each team. A really enjoyable day, highly organised by Dave and Rachel held at Riverside leisure centre.

Summary:

The standard and organisation of the tournament is at a high standard with all teams being at a similar ability whilst most importantly having fun. The winners of the day SW boys under 15’s ended up at the top after a close finals with PMVC ladies but were the deserving winners in a nail biting finale. Big thanks to Dave and Rachel for a great fun filled day of volleyball that is inclusive for all abilities.

That was Good…

edva group 01_web

Round one of this years EDVA Ladies Development events took place in Plymouth yesterday. Torexe entered two teams, an adult team and the youngsters, for Sam, Fi and Tiago, it was their first taste of match volleyball.

After the morning quick fire round, the youngsters found themselves in second place in group two, and with a play off match against PMVC Tigers to decide who would take part in the afternoons top group. A real nail-biting match but at the hooter, they had done it by two points and joined the Torexe adults in the top group, who had earlier sailed through the early group one round unbeaten.

This set up two three set matches between the Torexe teams and Plymouth University for the event title. A very competitive afternoon session and although the Torexe youngsters took sets off both Torexe and Plymouth University to set up a deciding third set in both matches. A win did not happen but it was a very well deserved third place finish for round one. First Place went to Torexe, with Plymouth Uni in second.

Eleven teams had entered which gave use eight matches, Bristol University were dispatched first, next up was Taunton, who had beaten us last week in the EDVA league. It was a very tight match but at the final whistle it was 25-24 to Torexe.

Horfield Hornet and Volleywood came and went, then it was the SW U16 Development Squad. Sliced float serves became an issue and we ended up 8 point down at the start, a quick reshuffle gave us a slight advantage and we set about clawing our way back into the match.  It was another nail biting finish but at the hooter the girls had done it by two points.

We were by now the team to watch and the remaining teams  were brushed aside, leaving us as the only unbeaten team and top spot.
